The Icons series is a weekly shop-the-look feature highlighting iconic women whose style captures a certain sensibility and sets them apart from the status quo, no matter the era, socio-political climate, or popular culture of their time, or ours. Muses— if you will— whose timeless aesthetic causes inspiration season after season.

Madonna

An indisputable icon, Madonna retains an eternal position on our list of muses. With a steadfast vision and unwavering creative drive, Madonna reinvented her look with each musical release, yet always upheld her signature combination of rebellion, feminism, sex positivity and freedom of expression. From her white lace “Like A Virgin” look for her first performance at the 1984 VMA’s, to the pared down “Like A Prayer” music video slip dress, to her myriad of striking “Blonde Ambition” tour looks complete with cone shaped bustier created by Jean Paul Gaultier, Madonna’s musical characters always captured the essence of her personal style and reflected her inner dialogue. Most recently, she introduced her new sound – and accompanying alter ego, Madame X in an Erdem look for the video for her comeback single, “Medellín”. Here are three of our favorite early, easy to wear Madonna looks and how to style them.
